Company of Heroes 2 Overview

Company of Heroes 2 has long been part of the catalog of games from THQ, the publisher before finally make weapons at the beginning of the year. Delighted to see the possibility of expanding its offer of Western games, Sega took advantage of the closure of the U.S. publisher to buy the developer Relic Entertainment. And by extension, the projects of the latter. In the aftermath, the proud new owner of Canadian studio has decided to postpone the release date of CoH 2 to 25 June next. A wise decision, allowing time for everyone to reorganize. Since all these changes, we have not had the opportunity to see the game it was something made recently. Both say now, it has not lost its features!

With the closing of the acquisition of THQ and Relic Entertainment by Sega, one might have feared that Company of Heroes 2 disappears radar for several months. Time for everyone to get back in the direction of travel. But it is not. At first glance, it did not even have any impact on the game design, if the postponement of the release date, which gives developers additional time to refine their baby apart. The communication plan unveiling dropper content as did, apparently, not changed either. This time, the new presentation of CoH 2 was to show us the way of War Theatre (Theater of War VO) and fragments of the single player campaign.

Theater of War, a very pleasant way

Behind the theater mode War lies a very simple ambition. Relic wants to offer players a set of tasks not within the scope of the single-player campaign. They allow to relive legendary battles, we opted for the Soviet or German side. In each case, various objectives to complete. During the first challenge we tried to meet (called Indirect Fire), we were asked, for example, destroying five buildings occupied by Hitler's troops in a limited time. To do this, there are vehicles that can throw rockets at regular intervals and some infantry units that can move on the map. Obviously, the enemies waiting around, often stashed in various constructions. It should also be noted that to negate the other buildings of the map allows you to earn a few extra seconds. That encourages them to constantly bombard almost everything we see. Of course, the challenge - importantly - is that of achieving the goal in time. Not insurmountable but not obvious since all failed strategic move leads to defeat.

The second mission of Theatre of War in which we were able to spend time (called Winter Defense) proposed that we protect some sort of radar soviétique.Concrètement turn, the goal is to push seven German waves. All thanks to a limited few army units initially, but rewarding between each attack. Of course, the opposition is also becoming increasingly stronger as time passes. Some soldiers at the beginning, the enemy runs fast tumbling several tanks from all sides. It should be noted that the position to defend is at least open and very simple to attack. Only a few items scattered here and there help to hide. However, the place has the distinction of being surrounded by frozen lakes. The opportunity to recall that the engine CoH 2 now can enjoy this type of surface to trap opponents (and vice versa). Swinging grenades or using a flamethrower, you can melt the ice (which is replenished later if it is left over). What to do to run a peak tank if it is very accurate, or at least force him to bypass the ice water and therefore take a different path. This obviously allows to consider many possibilities in terms of strategy. Overall, the challenge is once again to go for the Soviet troops are renewed only very little during the mission. Despite the provision of anti-tank gun, the task is relatively difficult.

Beyond two detailed examples above, there are a host of other challenges, some of which are playable in coop (we did not test them in our game session). All of which leads to the theater mode Relic War is a bridge between the solo and multi. Anyway, a few missions we traveled were really well thought out and, by extension, very fun to play. They should be able to extend the experience to great effect. For Sega, it is also an opportunity to launch some DLC with additional challenges when the time comes. But this is another story.

Heading east!

Sega and Relic we also left briefly approach the solo campaign Company of Heroes 2. As a reminder, it focuses on the invasion of the USSR by Germany in 1941. Heading east, therefore, for a series of missions interspersed with some nice cutscenes (however difficult to talk about script or narration with the little that we saw). Obviously, our play session was only allowed us to take a look at the very beginning of this campaign. So, not surprisingly, this is a kind of scripted tutorial that we could find. You learn to micromanage units, manage resources, use of existing capabilities available to each soldier or to build and improve the various buildings. The first mission for example proposes to try to stand up to a Tiger tank with some infantry units before the repair and recover. This is particularly the opportunity to show us the usefulness of anti-tank gun and tactical withdrawal (also called "it is better to steer there"). In the same vein, other proposed missions allow to understand the different aspects of the game often, we must take given points, pushing German troops destroy a particular purpose and so on. Hard to tell you more because we only had access to a small piece of the solo campaign.

Still, it can at least be aware of all the work around the game engine Gasoline 3 has an improved package in which lies the interest of CoH 2. We refer in particular to the management of the weather. The cold has an impact on the health of units while the snow slows. Similarly, we must pay attention to the wind or the best use of sensitive surfaces like ice. Whole system around the target troops was also the subject of a substantial work. Soldiers stand badly their targets through obstacles. Smoke may be sufficient to significantly hinder. And this is perfectly transcribed on the screen. The same goes for vehicles that are struggling to spot enemies in cities. Many points that really enrich the experience.

Payday 2

After a rather attractive theoretical presentation, publisher 505 Games held a few days ago a game session to find out more concretely Payday 2. Program, two missions multi within a team of four criminals. All, keyboard and mouse in hand. Will allow us to pinpoint the qualities of this friendly downloadable title whose output is still scheduled for next August.

For those who do not know of any Payday 2, know the game, you play a mobster. We are not talking here of a gangster with a big heart, but a true villain seeking to enrich costs. And to raise money, simply complete missions. The latter you are always given by the same contact and appear on a map displaying a satellite view of Washington, the city in which you operate. Bright circles indicate the different places where you can freely exercise your "talents". A short briefing can be aware of the nature of the mission and goals to accomplish. You then do the job. But beware, the work is done in teams. A four to be precise. And we must work together to achieve its goals.

gangster Squad

Roughly Payday 2 should include, according to its publisher 505 Games, a big hundred missions. These can sometimes be on to form a global scenario. If you do not know what to keep for the time being - not a simple check on the trial version - it seems clear that the content of Payday 2 is much denser than the first episode. This proves to be an excellent point. Regarding our play session, we discovered two missions. The first of them began in the back of a truck while it is more classic. Except near the feet of the four gangsters present in this unique place were several bags of drugs. A few seconds after the start of the mission, the vehicle is stopped and the sound of bullets rang out. The back door falls and now the team faces several police directly stashed behind various decorative elements. It is then quickly escape and resist the influx of cops is planquant on the roofs of various buildings that populate the neighborhood for less desert of the American city. After a few minutes that seem endless fast, pick-up arrives. The place where it stops is random. Impossible to anticipate. The goal is then to load up bags of drugs in the vehicle. It is then organized to have them out in advance, merely those that are at hand or throw himself into the lion's den and take a huge risk to get those who are still in the truck. Unless it has caught fire under the repeated police firing. Anyway, it must also escape from the place of the mission. The exit point is also random. It therefore remains only pray that it is easily accessible.

Ocean's Eleven

The second mission did not require a very different approach than the first. In it, we had to get a tiara on behalf of a Ukrainian mafia obscure. All in broad daylight in a jewelry located in the middle of a fairly busy street. For once, have a choice from the outset to players: go through the entrance and to panic everyone or select more discreet option, a window accessible via a deserted alley. Depending on how you start the mission, the events differ widely. In the first case, everyone panics and the police arrived quickly. The confrontation is direct but can quickly break off big if you do not waste time. The possibility of killing civilians - which causes a penalty - or be zigouiller is however larger. The second approach offers more guarantees. You can easily access the chests containing the precious and taken by surprise a few employees that hang on the back of the store. Payday useful because in two, you can always tie civilians and exchange against the team member who is arrested by the police. To open these famous chests and release their contents must however ask a drill. An action that may be more or less difficult depending on the quality of the equipment carried and the class of your character. The technician is doing better than his classmates. If your heart tells you, you heard the possibility to return to the main room to steal the jewels are exhibited. Rest again that risk-taking can cost as much as it relates if you're not careful.

The Italian Job

Obviously, before launching headlong into a mission, there is a preparation phase during which it chooses particular equipment that you will take with you. For example, you can opt for primary weapon (shotgun, heavy machine gun) or secondary (mostly lighter weapons like guns) different depending on the desired approach. For lovers of crafting, it is also possible to create self-assembling his weapons various elements, just as it is possible to make a mask, the emblem of his character. The game features a complete business system that is expected to spend the money earned here and there to improve their experience. We are not unmindful, feelings of shots are not, however extraordinary, especially when one has tasted the FPS Battlefield kind. However, they are nice enough not to tarnish the experience. It is also before the missions is determined what kind of help we can bring to the team. Is what we have on so what caregiving or rather what his friends provide ammunition? Like any good game of 2013, there is an RPG aspect Payday 2. You can indeed allocate points in four different talent trees: Mastermind, Ghost, Technician and Heavy Guy. Each of them can unlock and access various capacities. Do you want to "play" more infiltration or otherwise nag? Would you like to be the guy who pirate or leader who provides information to the troops? See for yourself. Finally, a word slip on the technical aspect. This is clearly true black point of the game only if it refers to our few parties. Payday class 2 does not really at the top of the basket of PC titles. The textures alone are sufficient to understand qu'Overkill still has work to provide that side.

The Bureau : XCOM Declassified

Built almost twenty years, the XCOM saga is currently operating a comeback in front of the media scene. After Enemy Unknown, the strategy game Firaxis signed, it is the turn of developer 2K Marin deliver his reinterpretation of the monument 90s through The Office: XCOM Declassified. This time point turn, but a third-person shooter by making tactical assaults. This is a title that, against all odds, could attract more than one player. This is at least what we think after spending several hours in his company.

We October 28, 1962. On Earth, the United States, to be precise, anxiety reign. Strange signals that we know neither the source nor nature, are indeed captured for some time. However, the panic is not in the agenda. At least, not yet. But it will not be long. It suffices for a few minutes to The Office: XCOM Declassified ask for its plot and reveal the threat to our beautiful planet. Whoever is going to have to shut it is FBI Agent William Carter. A serious man, strong, angular face with the false airs of Don Draper, the character of Mad Men. Luckily since the American series is one of the references of the art department studio 2K Marin. At the end of a scene at the very least curious, Carter discovers that one of his colleagues is nothing but a malicious alien. Super, the invasion began and evil aliens are already stashed in the population. Their goal: to pump the Earth's resources while eliminating, where possible, any form of resistance. The XCOM body responsible to stop the massacre, the cut out.

When 2K Marin XCOM revisits

Like any good XCOM, The Bureau proposes to stop the alien invasion. To do this, the body which William Carter is the main armed moved into a base with advanced technology. This is the place that serves as the main hub during the adventure. In skin Carter, you can wander freely between each mission to discover the different departments. So you have the option to return to the hospital, laboratories, barracks and so on. This allows in particular to talk with some important members of the organization. The dialogues are multiple choice but what we saw, there is a priori no important decisions taken at this level. There is more to determine what questions to ask in order to glean more information or month depending on your level of involvement in the story. Sometimes through these conversations, you get access to side quests. Initially, you are asked, for example, cause you to shoot at targets to improve your accuracy.
Obviously, The Office: XCOM Declassified is not strictly a game of strategy, the base does not give access to as many activities as that of Enemy Unknown. However, you can hire different agents who accompany you on the ground. If you can have only two partners in the heat of battle, your team can perform much more. Death is permanent in The Office (a tradition in the XCOM series), it will also often have to go through the recruitment box. Basically, hire an agent is roughly determine which of the four available classes (Commando, Engineer, Recon, Support) we are interested in, the aim is to form a complete team. You then have the ability to customize each character by changing the color of his clothes. Of course, your teammates gain experience in progressively clashes. Each level crossing can choose from two capacities (an irrevocable decision) and thus slightly specialize agent. Finally, it should be noted that the base is also where you choose your next intervention via a map of the United States. Sometimes, several missions are available simultaneously. Some of them can be done by your team. In the way of what is happening in Assassin's Creed for example, you decide who is going to accomplish the objectives. If the agents left on the ground can not be selected for you during your speeches, they gain experience. For those who are wondering, know that contrary to what was happening in Enemy Unknown, you do not have to ensure the support of other countries. The adventure this time is linear.

Tactical TPS

Do not be fooled, you will spend most of your time in "fashion GST". Understand by this mission. In the heat of the moment, The Office: XCOM Declassified wants to be a tactical GST. Not turn, but the opportunity to play active break - and thus remain under pressure - at any time to place his troops and define their actions (eg use abilities or target an enemy, a percentage while indicating the chances of success). Long undecided about the interface would have to face during the fighting, 2K Marin has opted for a wheel showing all the possibilities for each character. It is really easy to use and it is thus possible to quickly do exactly what you want. For once, every movement must be considered, especially if you opt for the maximum difficulty (there are a priori four). Indeed, the enemies do no gift and remember, death is permanent. A deceased officer will never return. However, whenever a teammate fell on the battlefield, there is a possibility of cure for a short period of time. We can then go yourself or ask the third member to take on this often dangerous task. After recovering from his injuries, the agent can then start to attack. Except that famous last difficulty where it remains locked until the end of combat.
2K Marin says it is impossible to rush headlong and fulfill one's objectives. To be quite frank, this statement seems, to some extent, quite problematic. It is true that the difficulty setting, using the crew is required. Normal you tell me. Yes but also worrying because your partners often appear unnecessarily reckless. Let them fend for five minutes only means in most cases found dying on the floor. Artificial intelligence agents appears limited. They are stupid and sometimes expose themselves to danger to shoot anything, including when they are stashed behind a piece of scenery. The cover system seems flawed to AI for us. We then spent long minutes to make trips from one end to the other of the map to treat them. Suffice to say that your life bar can also take a hit. However, let us not be categorical. Perhaps this is also a question of method? One solution is we actually appeared rather quickly. You actually have to deal with them at all times, ie move constantly and define each of their shares (the ability to create a chain of actions and, if necessary, interrupt, exists). Basically, it is imperative to never leave their initiative. However, we doubt that this is sufficient for the entire adventure. To see. Anyway, the game allows very precise movements, a cursor indicating the exact point where your teammate instead. Make moves also helps to have a broader view of the battlefield. The maps are not open but still allow different tactical approaches (diversionary attacks by the side ...).

The consequences of a complicated development

2K Marin has encountered many difficulties during development. Would that at the choice of the orientation of the FPS game? GST? Nag? Tactic? The American studio hesitated. And in a sense, it paid off as many avenues have been explored and many mistakes avoided. The interface is rather clear and effective, even if the PC gamers râleront probably due to the "consolisation" of the latter. The position of the camera, quite far from Carter also proved to be a good decision. This makes it easy to see the battlefield. Developers confess that for the first person, the tactical aspect was harmed due to lack of visibility. We also appreciate the gameplay forces reflection. It must obviously make plans to escape the clutches of some aliens. The Muton famous enemy if any, demand for example some organization to be shot because of its power and its high resistance to bullets. Some aliens (often a kind of boss) were also weaknesses that it is imperative to learn to hope to eliminate. The research side however seems to have disappeared. Humans recover and use alien technology but so scripted. There really is no choice to make.
Unfortunately, the long and rather chaotic game development has also had negative effects on the technical side. While some environments and special effects are quite successful, but we can not really say that the game shines at this level (we played on a PC that is more). Overall, it appears quite dated. The animations are very rigid one example among other shortcomings displayed by the game In our version, many of the problems were a bonus tarnish the experience. It may not, however, appreciate the work done at the art direction. The sixties side is very well made. We really feel like an unlikely encounter between Mad Men and an action film about an alien invasion. Class!

F1 2013

It has become a tradition since 2010, Codemasters annually delivers a new episode of the series F1. And not in 2013 that will change the situation. However, while the season is in full swing, the game is it not expected before next fall. And as always, it's a story of adjustments of subtle gameplay improvements and update to stick to the news of the season. Almost, because F1 2013, is not it really ...

Enter the legend

Obviously, Codemasters has decided this year to shake some habits. In the manner of an NBA 2K that you can play with the past glories of the NBA, F1 2013 offers a mode called F1 Classics. Main novelty of the annual installment of the series British developer, it can embody drivers have marked the history and legendary cars drive on no less popular flights. The program content dug in two different eras. Namely, first of all, the 80's with a selection of prestigious names. Those who have been revealed at this time are Nigel Mansell, Mario Andretti and Gerhard Berger. We also talk about five famous Formula 1 circuit and the famous Jerez and Brands Hatch. Logically, these are the 90 that make up the other half of the contents of F1 Classics fashion. This time, the proposed stars - at least, announced to date - are called David Coulthard, Jacques Villeneuve, Eddie Irvine and Alain Prost. Six legendary cars should also be available. Add to that the circuit of Imola and Estoril.

Obviously, the goal is to reach to feel the difference between these ancient times to 2013. Evolution is easy to see the level of driving sensations in vehicle performance but also in everything that relates to technology. At this level, the gap is of course enormous. It was also noted during the parties will Codemasters cure coating these races. Thus, a kind of sepia filter slightly changes color to reflect the lower image quality of television broadcasts from the 80s and, to a lesser extent, 90. For English speakers, the legendary journalist Murray Walker (b. 1923) also provides presentation races, giving more soul to the game What you should know is that players can enjoy all this content called classical through different game modes: quick race, a kind of modified championship, the time trial or multi modes locally or online. That seems fairly comprehensive. Note, however, an essential thing. After his release, F1 2013 will be available in two editions. The most expensive subtitled "Classic Edition" will contain everything we talked above. The second, simply called F1 2013 will offer everything about the 80s. However, for the next decade, it will not be the same. It will buy two DLC to perform a dive in the heart of the nineties. Although to date we do not yet know all the details, we doubt that a price difference justify this difference in content.

A logical evolution

Of course, those who swear by this is reassuring, Codemasters has also worked for the content. As usual, F1 2013 (both editions) contains many adjustments that should significantly enhance the experience if you are an amateur notified of the series. For players who merely sporadic parties, the differences are much less obvious. We must know. However, the work was real. The British studio talking about a lot of work on AI. Your opponents should react more intelligently in specific situations such as when overtaking. Since we could not confront us with no opponent during our session handling, impossible to tell you what is the promise in the air or concrete improvement. However, even if it is very difficult to detect and assess the improvements in gameplay through a few laps, it seemed that the pilot had become even more finesse, realism. At this stage, this is a feeling more than anything. Anyway, the game retains its capacity immersion. He manages to perfectly recreate the sensation of speed and provides great emotions. Obviously, F1 2013 is also more beautiful than its predecessor. This is due to details such as the management of shadows or light, but the result is very convincing.

More marginal but equally important, it is now possible to save in the middle of a session during a race weekend. Codemasters wants to effect that each player can handle as he wishes his parties. I must say it is always best to take full advantage of all the steps that make up a race to better prepare before facing competition. British developers also talk about the return of the "Grand Prix" simple mode, the emergence of a new story mode full of challenges solo, co-op and multi (online and split screen) or improving young driver test . Will see coming, especially as online experience should also be better. The platform is RaceNet meanwhile his return in an improved version to compare its performance with friends and access many challenges including from the community. If you do you are not yet realized, F1 2013 should be particularly time consuming. To enjoy all of this, however it will wait until next fall. Although no date has yet been officially announced, we can already bet on arrival in late September. Like every year since 2010.
